This is our final piece on purpose and how harnessing it’s power can not only transform your work life but also save you time and cut down on unneeded stress.
Simply put, we live in a world of too much noise and media grabbing for our attention. Everyday someone wants our attention or wants us to do something for them. With all these new challenges, we need to be ever focused on where we are purposely going. Setting ourselves apart and above all the noise is such an important part of any future successful entrepreneur. And we believe that purpose is a great tool to use to keep us on track.
First, Find Your Purpose!
If you already know your purpose then skip to the next section below. For those of you who don’t yet know your purpose, use the tips we outlined in the previous post to identify it. And in case you’re wondering what our purpose statement is, it looks like this - We believe in inspiring people to reach for their greatest potential. It took us a couple of tries to create a simple, clear, and understandable purpose statement. Our first attempts were a bit of a learning experience (they seemed right on the surface but didn’t quite fit) and we had to do it over again a few times to get it right. But now we feel like our purpose statement accurately describes who we are and what our purpose is for this season of our life. And we are excited to use our business to implement it.
If you have never taken the time to prepare a purpose statement then we highly encourage you to do it. It’s amazingly easy to do and when you have finished you'll find the process of identifying it to be quite liberating. So go do it! Find what your purpose is in this season.
Then Make It Part of Your Life
Once you have good idea of what your purpose is make sure do these simple things to make it part of your everyday life and keep you on track:
Step #1 - Keep it clear, short and simple!
The key word is CLEAR. A clearly communicated statement will be easily understood by yourself and everyone who is helping you work toward your goals. Complicated goals or ideas rarely come to past.
Keep it short. We have learned that a single sentence purpose statement works best. If is more than a single sentence it will be too hard to explain and far too hard to stay true to. If it doesn't fit on a sticky note then it’s TOO BIG.
Keep it simple. In our experience a large purpose or vision is just to complicated to come to pass. Once you have a clear picture of where you’re going you can easily get there.
A clear, short and simple but powerful vision is what will take us to our destination. Plus it helps us stay focused and say no to the distractions of life.
Step #2 - Put it up on the wall.
Place your purpose statement up on a wall, either in your office or on your fridge or somewhere that you will see it each morning and multiple times throughout the day. Having your purpose out and in front of you is like looking at your destination on a map before you start a road trip. It creates an anchor point for your journey and reminds you why you are doing what you are doing. It brings meaning and value to your work even in those tough days when you feel lost in the clutter and noise. Simply put, if it's not written down and seen continually it will not happen. It will remain just a thought in your head that most likely will never be put to action. Your life goes in the direction of what is at the forefront of your mind. This is why it's so important to have it written out in front of you. Trust us!
Any success book for entrepreneurs will tell you that if it's not written down and in front of your eyes then the chances of it happening are slim to none. So write it down. Keeping your purpose in front of your eyes is a great way to reset your mind every morning and take control of your day. So don't have it in your iPhone somewhere or buried in a large stack of paper in the office.
Step #3 - Start taking control of your day.
Now that you have your purpose statement out in front of you, it can be used to simplify what you say yes to in life. Its easy to get distracted in today's culture but with a purpose you can now start controlling your day instead of letting it control you. When you start off every morning by looking at your purpose it enables you to actually plan out what is important and cut the rest.
Simply put, if something is grabbing for your attention but it doesn't fit into your purpose statement or add value to your end goal then just say no and RUN. Set a length of time (say 3-6 months) to stay true to your purpose and watch how much faster you accelerate towards your goals. Seeing those measurable results will make it easier to consistently cut out the rest as part of an intentional lifestyle that brings you ever closer to an amazing and well balanced life. Give it a try, you've got nothing to lose (except your Netflix account ;).
We believe in helping people reach for their greatest potential.
Stay true to your purpose.
