Most of the time when people think of summer weddings they think of sunshine, blue skies, beautiful flowers and birds singing in the distance. What brides don't always think of (though grooms usually do!) is how incredibly hot it can get on a day with full sun. If you're considering a outdoor summer ceremony, here are a few things to consider to make it enjoyable for everyone.
1. Plan some shade
Talk to your venue about options for shade. Some outdoor spaceshave large trees that can provide a bit of sun relief for the guests when they're mingling or even if the timeline runs late and they have a little extra time out there. Other venues and rental companies have large tents or covered areas where guests can enjoy the weather without sweating too much. Older guests and children in particular can find extreme heat taxing, so keep that in mind when planning your ceremony location (plus having a covered area is a great alternative in the event of rain instead of sun!)
2. Provide some amenities for guests
Have some cold drinks - water, lemonade, etc - at the ceremony site for guests to help themselves to along with sunscreen and fans to keep everyone cool and burn free! Some couples choose to have their ceremony programs do double duty as guest fans, which guarantees that guests will appreciate your stationary!
And while you're at it, having bobby pins, band-aids, lotion, and gum in the ladies' washroom is an extra nice gesture to ensure your guests are comfortable.
3. Plan wedding party attire
When you're planning the outfits for your wedding party, for goodness sake give the poor groomsmen a break. Don't make them wear full black suits or tuxes to an outdoor summer wedding. Light grey suits have been very popular this summer with the guys and they look incredibly handsome when paired with suspenders and bow ties or with a classic grey vest. They guys will thank you for skipping the jackets!
Also, though its not pretty to talk about, consider skipping stilletoes or high heels for the girls. In addition to making it hard to walk in the grass, keep in mind that in extreme heat extremities swell and those pretty little toes will be begging for relief long before the end. Save the pain and go with cute flats or wedges for the ladies.
4. Bring lots of drinks, sunscreen, and bug spray for the wedding party
Lastly, don't forget to pack a few amenities for the wedding party to take with them throughout the day. Cold drinks, sandwiches and snacks, not to mention sunscreen and bug spray can make a big difference in the happiness and energy level of the entire party. We often a few amenities with us to share, but in the event you're not with us on your wedding day be sure to plan ahead for the best day possible!
